Spyware Scams

This is how bad things have become in the spyware scams.

The FTC shut down a Washington company called Max Theatre because it was offering a service to PC users from a site called SpywareAssassin.com. The company would offer a free security scan on the visitor’s PC from their site. The problem with their scans is that in most cases, the reported “infections” didn’t exist, and the machines they said were dirty were often clean. They would then attempt to sell the consumer a spyware “cleaner” for $30. Problem number two: their “cleaner” didn’t do anything.

As one commenter stated at the story’s site, the problem with the FTC crackdown is that the company will probably get a slap in the wrist and that’s all. The world is just filed with cretins, and technology will not hold them at bay.
